The River Vecht, which runs right through the middle of Loenen aan de Vecht, is one of the cleanest and most beautiful rivers in The Netherlands. Only a few years ago the whole river was cleaned all the way from Utrecht to Muiden, so not only does it look clean it is teaming with wildlife.
In days gone by this used to be a swampy area, but it has been altered by humans over hundreds of years into something completely different. This time in a positive way.
Along the river there many beautiful country homes, castles and tea houses. This lake district, which arose from ‘The Great Extraction’ has its roots from the 11th century.
